Yang Hak Seon 양학선 made history at the London Olympic games by winning the first gold medal in gymnastics for South Korea on Monday.
In the men’s vault finals, Yang’s first attempt earned him a 16.466 due to a slight slip on the landing, but a flawless finish on his second attempt resulted in a score of 16.600, reports Yonhap News. His average score of 16.533 edged out Russia’s Denis Ablyazin’s silver medal score of 16.399.
The nimble gymnast’s routine had the highest level of difficulty at 7.4, while the other seven contenders were all vaulting at difficulty levels of less than 7.0. Yang’s signature move, appropriately named “the Yang Hak-Seon” is a triple-twisting handspring front somersault.
After his win, the 19-year-old expressed his joy and excitement for the future of his sport in Korea.
